Apple has officially announced the launch of its new budget-friendly smartphone, the iPhone 16e, set to replace the aging iPhone SE. The device will be available for pre-order starting this Friday, with an official release scheduled for February 28. In addition, Apple has confirmed that its Apple Intelligence suite, powered by generative AI, will be available in French starting in April.
A Modern Design with Advanced Biometric Security
The iPhone 16e marks the end of an era, as it eliminates the physical home button and fingerprint-based Touch ID in favor of a 6.1-inch edge-to-edge display. At the top of the screen, a new 12-megapixel front camera is housed within a notch, enabling Apple’s Face ID for secure facial recognition.
Powerful Camera System for High-Quality Photography and Video
Apple has significantly upgraded the iPhone 16e’s camera capabilities. The rear camera system features a dual-function 48-megapixel sensor that can produce high-resolution 12-megapixel images, mimicking the effect of an optical telephoto lens. This marks a fourfold improvement over the iPhone SE’s camera. Additionally, the device supports 4K video recording with Dolby Vision at 60 frames per second, enhancing video quality, especially in low-light conditions.
Extended Battery Life for Heavy Usage
Despite its compact form factor, the iPhone 16e boasts a larger battery than its predecessor. Apple claims the device can provide up to 26 hours of continuous video playback—six hours more than the iPhone 11 and 12 hours more than the iPhone SE. The new model also supports wireless charging and replaces the outdated Lightning port with a USB-C connector, aligning with European Union regulations that mandate standardized charging ports across electronic devices.
AI-Powered Features with Apple Intelligence
The iPhone 16e will support Apple Intelligence, Apple’s latest suite of AI-powered tools, which will be fully available in French by April. With the A18 processor, the same chip used in the iPhone 16, the device promises advanced AI capabilities, including automatic photo enhancements and text generation. Apple has also introduced an in-house modem, the C1, reducing its reliance on Qualcomm’s chipsets.
Competitive Pricing in the Market
The iPhone 16e will start at CAD 899 for the base model with 128GB of storage—a notable increase from the iPhone SE’s CAD 579 price point. However, it remains more affordable than the standard iPhone 16, which starts at CAD 1,129.
Apple Canada will continue to offer the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15, priced at CAD 849 and CAD 999, respectively.
With its modern design, improved camera system, extended battery life, and AI-powered features, the iPhone 16e aims to redefine Apple’s entry-level smartphone experience. Pre-orders begin this Friday, with the official launch set for February 28.
